A NELSON hero who risked his life to save two people after a road accident received a Red Rose Award for his bravery at a celebrity-hosted ceremony at Park Hall Hotel, Charnock Richard.
James Lawson (16), of Linkside Avenue, received the glass trophy at a county event on Lancashire Day, along with nine other public-spirited people in Lancashire.
Presenter and broadcaster Tony Livesey, a former reporter with Leader-Times Newspapers, presented the award to James, who has recently moved to Nelson, having lived in Morecambe.
James was nominated for the award after attending an incident in February which was featured on the front page of this newspaper. He was 15 at the time and was staying at the home of his grandad, Mr Keith Lawson, in Cliviger.
They both heard a bang outside the front door and rushed out to find that two cars had collided and burst into flames. James, who has applied to join the Army, risked his own life by pulling two people from the flames.
When asked if he thought of himself as a hero, James said: "No, not really, it was just instinct. My friends and family were really proud, though."
With help from James, his grandad, a company director of Halliwells Funeral Service, Colne, and other people at the scene, the two accident victims escaped with only minor injuries.
The annual awards, were backed by Lancashire County Council, Rock FM, Radio Lancashire and the Lancashire Evening Post, and were hosted by television and radio's Ted Robbins and Rock FM presenter Rick Vaughn, while entertainment was by top singers Lucie Silvas and Simon Webbe.
The overall winner was Trevor Hemmings, of Chorley, who was crowned Lancastrian of the Year. He owns Blackpool Tower.
Dave Spikey, well known as a stand-up comedian and "Phoenix Nights" star, also from Chorley, took home the award for Celebrity of the Year.
County Coun. Hazel Harding, county council leader, said: "Lancashire is a special place to live and work.
"We have honoured 10 very special people but Lancashire actually has thousands of people who put other people and their neighbours first.
"Lancashire people are famously modest people who always try to use their qualities for the good of themselves and others."
