NEIGHBOURS of proposed supermarket site were stunned to learn it was also being considered for an Islamic school, community centre and mosque.
An unsigned letter was hand-delivered on Monday to houses close to the Butts Mill site.

It said a secondary bid was to be submitted by a group of Asian businessmen from Bradford and added that negotiations were also being carried out with a local farmer with a view to opening an Islamic Culture Centre.

One man was so concerned he visited a local estate agents to find out what was going on.

The letter said the mosque/school and community centre plan would alleviate residents' concerns over traffic problems, although it did accept there could be an issue with loudspeakers calling worshippers to prayer.

Access, it said, would be via Calf Hall Road and Monkroyd Avenue.

Coun. Coun. Margaret Bell, of Pendle Council's West Craven Committee, dismissed the letter and confirmed there was only one application for that site under consideration.

"Its a complete joke and I just feel someone is out to make mischief," she said.
