£9 billion boost for Rolls-Royce order books

ROLLS-Royce's order book got a $9.3 billion boost during the Farnborough Airshow, but workers at the Barnoldswick plant have yet to find out how big a share of those orders they will get.
That will depend on where the wide chord fan blades and front bearing housings are made for the company's new Trent XWB engine, especially designed to cater for the modern widebody section of the market.
Orders for the XWB accounted for almost seven billion dollars at the airshow.
And with this being the only engine offered for the Airbus A350 XWB, it is estimated future sales over the next 20 years could add up to a whopping $400 billion.
Traditionally, all the wide chord fan blades and front bearing housings for all the Trent engines have been made at Barnoldswick.
And union convenor Jon Brough said this week that if Barnoldswick did get the work, it would be potentially the biggest investment in the history of the site and involve a massive spending programme.
"But some of the workforce have expressed concern that Rolls-Royce is looking at the possibility of building a second factory outside of the UK that would take on some of the work traditionally done here," he said.
Rolls-Royce has yet to confirm its plans, and with production levels on the rise, there is no suggestion that locating the work outside of the UK would affect job security for the local workforce as it would still be involved in making parts for the remaining Trent family of engines.
