Barnoldswick Cricket Club has won a £66,589 grant from the England and Wales Cricket Board's Community Club Development Programme to upgrade its facilities.

The programme is a funding package established by Sport England and the Government to develop stronger links between the country's leading clubs and local communities.

Barnoldswick was chosen because of its work with local youngsters and the strength of its junior cricket development programme.

The cash has enabled the club to upgrade its pavilion by providing improved toilet and changing room accommodation.

Club secretary Phil Brown said: "We were really delighted with the grant as upgrading the pavilion was a priority need. Through the support given by ECB, we have been able to completely renovate the toilets and changing rooms and build an additional dressing room."

Other improvements have also been carried out – paid for out of receipts generated by the sale of the Frank Street social club. These included the refurbishment of the bar and social area of the pavilion as well as improvements to the ground.

Mr Brown was pleased to report that recently the club had moved forward both on and off the field, with membership increasing. "We also have a strong youth development programme and we provide coaching and play opportunities for five local primary schools and a secondary school, " he said.

"We see this grant as an investment in cricket at the club for the future."

Jennie Price, chief executive of Sport England, said the programme was an innovative way of helping to ensure community clubs – the heart of grass roots sports development in the country – received the capital investment they need.
