AN elderly Barnoldswick woman died during surgery on a broken hip, an inquest has heard.

Mrs Hilda Fenton (91) broke her hip after she fell out of bed at Briercliffe Lodge, Rainhall Crescent, in June, 2007.

Dr Philip Lumb, who conducted the post-mortem examination, said her heart had not been able to handle the stress of the surgery. He said: "During the operation there was inadequate blood supply to the heart because of furring of the arteries. It is a big bone to break and it was necessary to have surgery but there were no problems with the surgery itself."

Mr Richard Taylor, East Lancashire Coroner, recorded a verdict of accidental death and said: "She fell a short distance from the bed and the surgery was needed. Because the fall was an accident and that is what caused the surgery, I have no option but to record it as accidental death."
