Driving instructor's Scrapheap Challenge
DRIVING instructor Gareth Almond has been picked to lead a team in Channel 4's Scrapheap Challenge programme – and he wants other disabled people to join in the fun.
Gareth, who lost his arm in an accident years ago, will represent the Mobilise Disability magazine and its members on the programme.
His son, Steven, who works for the RAC, will join him on the official team along with Ashley Short, a sheet metal worker from Keighley in the programme that asks teams to build crazy contraptions using scrap.
Gareth, of Meadow Way, Barnoldswick, will know tomorrow if his design for a motorised surf board capable of carrying three people was successful enough to be picked for the show. He didn't find out what the challenge was until Friday when he was issued the design brief, and had until Wednesday to formulate his plans.
If chosen, he and his team will have four weeks to build the contraption before the official handover on Friday, August 15th, ready for the televised competition against five other teams at the end of August.
"I want other disabled people to get involved as that is what this is all about really, to show people what can be done, even if they are disabled," said Gareth. "I've already earmarked the parts I need and it will be cobbled up from all sorts of bits and pieces with an inverted caravan roof as the base."
Anyone who wishes to find out more, or volunteer to help, should call Gareth on 07778 734090.
