A BARNOLDSWICK teenager will fly to Prague on Sunday to play for Scotland in the European Rugby League Championships.

Ashley (Ash) Honeyman (16), who plays as centre and wing, has been selected for the Scottish under-18s squad which has games on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

His parents, Kevin and Lesley Honeyman, are travelling to Prague to watch his debut, with Mr Honeyman staying on to watch the rest of the championships.

Ash has been playing rugby since he was 10, first with West Craven Warriors and then Keighley Cougars, where he has recently joined the Under-18 squad after two years with the scholarship side.

His dad approached the Scottish side's development manager about the possibility of him playing for Scotland and, after hearing of his playing successes, he invited Ash to attend trials in Glasgow.

Having made the youth team, he is already hoping to progress through the ranks and make the senior squad.

Ash will have little time to reflect on his glory when he returns, as he is to start at Thomas Whitham College, Burnley, on September 8th where he will study for A-levels in biology, maths, psychology and PE.

Keighley Cougars also starts its new season on September 14th, which means a return of the twice-weekly training.
