A BID has been launched to get Barnoldswick's town green officially designated as common land.
If successful, it will ensure the open space in front of Cravenside down to Skipton Road is kept, as the designation would prevent any building work.
Coun. David Whipp proposed the idea at Tuesday's meeting of Pendle Council's West Craven Committee.
"It would be brilliant if this land, which is at the heart of Barnoldswick, could be kept open and green for ever," he said.
"Otherwise, who knows what will happen in years to come if Pendle Council disappears and we end up as part of a larger authority who take the decision to develop that land in a few decades time."
The committee would need permission from Pendle Council's full committee for any change in designation and the committee asked for the relevant process to be set in motion.
