MAJOR expansion work to site a Spar shop at Strand Service Station in Skipton Road, Barnoldswick, is set to start later this year.
Planning permission has been granted for the redevelopment, which will see the replacement of the fuel pumps and canopy and the creation of a new enlarged kiosk to feature the convenience store.

The application was made by Spar distributors James Hall and Co. (Southport) Ltd, who arebuy the garage from Alan and Keith Brown.

Retail and Development Director for the company Mr John Hodgson said: "We haven't completed the purchase yet, but we're 99.9% certain of being able to start work at the back end of this year. There would typically be a five-month build programme which would mean springtime by the time the site is fully developed."

The forecourt will be enlarged and 20 parking spaces are to be provided. However, plans to replace the fuel pumps and underground tanks note the removal of LPG gas sales and car sales from the garage, and the double car wash bay is to be replaced by a single car wash and a jet wash.

The shop's hours will be governed by the opening times of the garage and no products other than convenience and motoring-related goods are to be sold, as a condition has been made to protect Barnoldswick town centre.

This out-of-centre development follows just weeks after other developers withdrew an application for a new supermarket in the middle of Barnoldswick.
