Stalemate over Railway Hotel cobbles

LANCASHIRE County Council is to be asked to consider match-funding for a resurfacing scheme proposed for the front of the Railway Hotel in Barnoldswick.
Several falls have been reported over the year, as people tripped over the uneven cobbles, but so far councillors' have been unable to get the county council or brewery to stump up the money for repairs due to disputes over ownership.

Having reached stalemate and with no speedy solution in sight, members of Pendle Council's West Craven Committee were asked to consider a match funding scheme - where the committee would pay half the cost if the county council would agree to pay a similar amount. If possible, the owners of the pub would also be asked to chip in.

The work would involve the cobbles being replaced with a more suitable surface that could eventually become part of the adopted highway.

"Hopefully this would enable us to make some rapid progress rather than continually going round in circles," said Coun. David Whipp.
