SALTERFORTH is bidding to become East Lancashire's first "No Cold Calling" zone - with official signs warning door-to-door sellers they are not welcome in the village!.
Hawkers were believed to have been involved in the vicious assault on 89-year-old war veteran Bob Schofield and his late wife, Mollie in November, although no one has ever been charged with the offence.
Now the parish council is working with the police to try and deter any such sellers operating in the area in the future in a bid to make everyone feel safer.
The initial idea for the "No Cold Calling" zone came from Chairman Jeff Haydock after he and his wife, Kath, spotted a sign advertising a similar ban in Poulton on a day out.
"The attack on Bob and Mollie frightened a lot of elderly people in the village and I suggested to the parish council that we should adopt a similar zone," said Coun. Haydock.
Councillors thought it was a great idea as did PCSO Ailsa Pate who agreed to find out more about the scheme which is authorised by Trading Standards.
If adopted, signs advertising the "No Cold Calling" zone would be put up on the outskirts of the village. Details of any sales firms caught ignoring the signs would then be reported to Trading Standards who would contact the firm and ask it to respect villagers' wishes.
A meeting has now been set up between the police and Trading Standards and the parish council has earmarked some cash to pay for the necessary signs should the scheme be adopted as everyone hopes.
"All the villagers I have spoken to so far are in support of the scheme," said Coun. Haydock.
"We would be the first in East Lancashire if it does go ahead and I am sure others will follow our lead."
PC Claire Sharples, one of the officers who will be at next week's meeting, said the scheme was very much in the early stages.
"The first stage will be to get everyone's views and a questionnaire will be going out soon," she said.
In the meantime, PCSO Ailsa Pate has been handing out home security packs containing a door chairn, mirror, card magnifier and property marking kit to older residents.
Anyone who hasn't already got one can pop into the Age Concern session at 2-30 p.m. on Monday at Salterforth Parish Rooms.
