Call for Parkwise to target taxi drivers
And stag party prank renames Coal Street to Hoof Street

CAMPAIGNING conservationists are calling on Parkwise to crack down on taxi drivers who abuse parking restrictions in Church Street.
Members of Burnley Civic Society have written to Burnley Council to call on Parkwise to enforce the double yellow lines following concerns that taxi drivers park illegally for large parts of the day.
The matter was raised at the monthly meeting, which saw members also look at the latest planning applications.
They were pleased to hear a plan to develop George Street Mill and the canal shed has been refused, but disappointed to discover the Gordon Lennox pub in Cliviger is to be replaced by houses, rather than being converted. This together with the loss of the Fighting Cocks in the village, as a pub, is upsetting as two historic names go.
Members are to write to Burnley Council to ensure the proposed access through the planned housing development at Burnley College in Ormerod Road is made a statutory public right of way.
They are also concerned no progress has been made by the borough council re-locating the frieze from the former Thompson Centre. Suggestions of where to site it have been passed to the council.
Inquiries have revealed the re-signing of Coal Street to Hoof Street was a prank by a stag party.
The recent award ceremony by the society and the Mayor of Burnley, Coun. Ida Carmichael of blue plaques and the Mayor's award of excellence had been successful and work is starting on new honours.
An annual conference and meeting for the Lancashire Federation of Civic Societies at Towneley Hall is to be organised by members and they were pleased to hear the planning and design advisory group of the Weavers' Triangle Partnership Board is to draw up guidance notes with English Heritage to help potential developers understand the type of development wanted.
The next meeting is on Wednesday, July 30th, at 7 p.m. in Burnley Town Hall. Interested people are invited to attend and more information can be obtained from secretary Mr David Smith on 423154.
