A POPULAR Burnley jewellers, which has been in the town for 36 years, is to close this Christmas as its owner retires.

Thelma Gray Jewellers has been a regular fixture in the Market Hall since 1972. Originally a market stall, the business moved into a permanent shop and has attracted customers from across the North-West.

Owner Mrs Thelma Gray said she will miss fellow traders and customers, but added: "It's time to retire."

She plans to continue trading until Christmas Eve to ensure she can say goodbye to her regular customers in the run-up to the festive period.

"I've watched three generations of customers come into the shop. Now I see young women who used to come in as children bringing their children in. It's been a nice business to be in.

"Things have changed tremendously since I started out. Trends in shopping have changed.

"I will miss the people more than anything. I have met people from all walks of life. It's been a very interesting business and I would like to thank all my customers."

In her retirement, Mrs Gray, who lives in Nelson, plans to spend more time with her family, including her four grandchildren.
