EMPLOYEES at four Burnley off-licences have received £80 Penalty Notices for Disorder after being caught selling alcohol to underage youths.
The move follows a police test purchasing exercise last week as part of ongoing crime campaign Operation Summer Nights.

Staff at five other off-licences have been praised by police for refusing to sell alcohol to the underage youth posing as a customer.

Burnley PCSO Dave Johnson said: "The penalty notices were issued during the anti-social behaviour patrols currently being carried out as part of Operation Summer Nights.

"I think it is really disappointing that some of our off-licences are still selling alcohol to youths despite repeated warnings and police targeting. Underage drinking is a significant concern for local communities and local businesses that sell alcohol have a key role to play in helping us address the problem.

"On the positive side, I would like to praise the off-licences who are living up to their responsibilities and encourage them to continue asking for ID and, where necessary, refusing to serve local youths."
