IN-FORM striker Martin Paterson hopes the win at Bury will pave the way for an assault on the Championship.

The £1m man has scored all three of Burnley's goals this season – a debut header which turned out to be a consolation in the 4-1 defeat at Sheffield Wednesday, and Carling Cup brace on Tuesday.

The 21-year-old is aiming to take the positives from Gigg Lane into Saturday's first home game against Ipswich Town, and put some league points on the board.

In this day and age, league tables are formulated before a ball is kicked, and, although it is only after one game, Burnley are bottom on goal difference, and Paterson feels the Clarets can bounce back against the Tractor Boys: "Things at Sheffield Wednesday didn't go to plan, but we were back in training and working hard on Monday, and we showed at Bury that we're determined to put things right and kick on with the season.

"I think people have read into the start of the season a little bit too much – we're still ready to go in and attack the Championship.

"I think this is the kick-start, and hopefully the catalyst.

"It's a tough game against Ipswich – well, massive in terms of the Championship; they've brought some great players in pre-season.

"We've got to do more than compete, we've got to look to win."

The former Scunthorpe man is happy with the way things are going personally at his new club, and he feels his hard graft is paying off: "It comes with hard work, I think you've got to do that first and do everything on the training field.

"There will be times when I don't score and there'll be times when I will but I think, more importantly, it's about working hard and being a good professional.

"I think that's more important than scoring goals, and that's what I try to do.

"But we've been working hard on shooting in training and finishing. I'm just blessed to score, and lucky really.

"I've just got to keep putting in the performances and the hard work and keep my professionalism."

And he feels Burnley's attacking quartet, including Chris Eagles, Wade Elliott and Robbie Blake, are beginning to click: "There are new faces and attacking options in the team, and you've just got to adapt and get used to working together and gel, and I think we're just about doing it now, and there are good things to come."

Eagles was denied his first goal for the club, seeing his late effort kept out by a terrific save from Bury keeper Wayne Brown, with Paterson turning in the rebound, and he thinks it won't be long before the fellow new boy is off the mark: "I think Chris will score many goals, so I said to him 'let me have a couple for now'."

And he is pleased with the chances being created for him so far, including Christian Kalvenes' wonderful centre for the opener against Bury: "I don't know how he put that in, it was a great ball.

"The lads work hard for me and I work hard for them, and they put it in positions where really you can't miss.
"Sometimes you will miss, so you've got to put the work in as well."
