Education group facing closure

THE local branch of an organisation established more than a century ago faces closure unless more members attend its latest series of classes.
The Colne branch of the Workers' Education Association agreed at its meeting last month that it would disband unless its membership increased.
The WEA was formed in 1903, when education was not easily available for adults. Today, it provides opportunities for people who wish to continue learning and for those who want to return to education to pick up skills or knowledge.
Anyone wanting more information should call secretary Norma Kendall on 844412.
The first of the latest WEA courses started last Tuesday. "The Story In The Book" is a seven-week course designed for those who find reading tiring because of eyesight difficulties, although everyone is welcome to attend. Classes are held at Nelson and Colne College's Reedyford site from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
The other two new courses are: 160 Years Of Local Railways, starting on Wednesday, October 22nd, further information from Bill James on 01257 483289, and Introduction to World Religions, starting on Tuesday, January 13th, 2009, information from Norma Kendall on 844412.
