A PUB was evacuated after an extension cable supplying it with electricity caught fire.

Fire crews escorted people out of the Cotton Tree Inn, in Winewall Lane, while they tackled the underground blaze about 10-15 p.m. on Friday.

Reports there was an explosion were dismissed by a United Utilities spokesman, who said: "It was simply a case of a cable which led to the pub catching fire. The fire service alerted us, and our engineers were on site to repair the cable once the blaze had been put out.

"The cable was only connected to the pub, so it would not have affected anybody else's supplies."
