Century-old photo memories of Nelson's past
OUR scene from yesteryear this week is from 1911 and shows a young boy aged five sitting on an early motor bike who would exactly 50 years later, in 1961, become no less than the proud first citizen of the Borough of Nelson.
This faded, almost a century old photo is from the family album of well-known Nelsonian, Colin Stanworth, of Ashton Drive, whose father (the boy on the bike) did indeed become Coun. Richard Stanworth for Whitefield Ward for many years, the Mayor of Nelson, in 1961 and an Alderman of the borough.
The shop in the picture is Robert Hargreaves ice-cream salon at 122 Manchester Road, opposite the Star Cycling Club and Robert himself is seen in the shop doorway.
Robert is remembered by Colin as "Uncle Bob" and was a life-long friend of his grandfather (Richard's dad), the local blacksmith, Levi Stanworth, whose business was opposite the Station Hotel.
Richard was, as a boy, often at the busy ice-cream and pie-and-pea establishment and years later, told Colin of the many trestle tables and wooden forms at the back of the shop. Sawdust was on the flag floor and spittoons for the many tobacco twist chewers were all around. Every weekend, the tables were cleared away and an area was made for wrestling or boxing contests.
It's just an old, fast-fading photo of Nelson's past but the memories evoked are priceless.
