Just weeks away from becoming the Hollies ...

THIS week, our quantum leap back in time takes us to early 1963 and an excellent and evocative picture of the local rock band the Dolphins.
The 45-year-old photo is from my collection of my late friend's vast output during his long and highly successful career for this very newspaper - the one and only much missed Tim Procter.
Tim, working round the clock, took hundreds of pictures of musicians, including solo artists and pop groups during the "Swinging Sixties", many of them captured at the "Ballroom of the Stars", our local musical utopia, "The Imp".
This particular picture was taken for the late brilliant Leigh Morrissey's "Young Ones" column when Leigh, at editor Noel Wild's request, was to travel with the Dolphins from Nelson to a coffee bar just off Deansgate in Manchester.
Here in our photo are our pop heroes - from left to right: bass guitarist Bernie Calvert, drummer Bobby Elliott, vocalist Ricky Shaw and lead guitarist Tony Hicks, all packing their £800 worth of equipment into their £300 van. Leigh joins the band at 3-30 p.m. on the terraced Nelson street and by 5 p.m., the five of them have arrived via the trusty van in the city of Manchester.
Now, the four musicians set up their amplifiers and rehearsals began after the group had all enjoyed hamburgers all round. By 7-30 p.m. the Dolphins had changed into their £20 silk suits and for the next three hours, made two appearances, playing around 30 songs, to huge applause from the audience.
Afterwards, for half-an-hour, the band packed their equipment back into the van and, along with Leigh, enjoyed a late supper in a cafe on the Oxford Road before arriving back in Nelson in the early hours of the morning.
Within a few weeks by May 1963, Tony and Bobby joined Allan Clarke, Graham Nash and Eric J. Haydock to become the Hollies and the very first of their 24 consecutive hits was in the charts.
