THE Barrowford in Bloom group helped make the Leeds and Liverpool Canal cleaner when they took part in an event which took place at the weekend.

Ribble Rivers Trust is encouraging people to volunteer to help make rivers and canals better places. And it had organised an event starting out from the Forge Business Park in Reedyford Road, Nelson, right on the border with Barrowford.

Susan Sunderland from Barrowford in Bloom said: “The weather was ideal – bright sunshine. The last litter picking session was postponed because of the snow!

“There were 11 of us in total, including Jamie Jackson, who is a volunteer with the Canal and River Trust (ex-British Waterways), who took away all the rubbish.

“Seven of the volunteers were from the Barrowford in Bloom group; one lady came from Nelson after reading about it in the Nelson Leader and two volunteers came from the Ribble River Trust. One had come from Blackburn.

“We collected 23 bags of litter from the section of the towpath from Scotland Road to Barrowford Locks. Several people who were walking on the towpath thanked us for our efforts!”

And she added: “I intend to pass on this information to Pendle MP Andrew Stephenson, as I read in the Nelson Leader that he has a meeting with the Canal and River Trust on Friday.”
