“Filthy” Colne dairy farm is closed

"FILTHY": The pasteuriser and raw milk holding tanks at Hubbs Hose Farm, which has just been served with a closure order (S)

AN emergency closure order has been served on a “filthy” Colne dairy farm.

Action was taken against Hubbs House Farm, in Southfield Lane, after the dairy and its equipment were found to be an “imminent health risk”.

According to Pendle Council, an inspection by an environmental health officer revealed animal slurry covered the dairy floor in areas used for processing, bottling and storing milk.

An emergency hygiene prohibition notice was served requiring owner John Leslie Allison to close the premises immediately. Mr Allison has previously been prosecuted by the council for hygiene offences.

And now the council’s actions have been confirmed by Pennine magistrates, who granted a closure order on the site last week, and ordered Mr Allison to pay costs of £500.

Coun. John David, who represents environmental health in Pendle, said: “I am very pleased the court recognised the seriousness of the conditions found by our environmental health officer and supported the action on closing the premises.

“Consumers rightly have an expectation that food is safe to eat and produced in hygienic conditions. As a council, we take food safety very seriously. Our environmental health officers will not hesitate to use legal powers to protect residents where this is felt necessary.”

According to an Animal Health and Veterinary Labaratories Agency spokesman, who spoke to the Colne Times following Mr Allison’s prosecution, there are currently no cattle on the farm. The spokesman said: “Our concern is lifestock on the farm.We believe now there are now no animals on the farm, so our involvement has come to an end.”
