a LABOUR Party stalwart who has served as a councillor at three levels has announced he is not standing for re-election in the Lancashire County Council elections next May.

County Coun. George Adam has been the representative for the Nelson South division for the last four years, serving the Southfield, Cloverhill and Walverden wards.

He previously served as a borough councillor for Walverden for 10 years and was the first chairman of Nelson Town Council.

He was Mayor of Pendle in 2006/7, and told us this week his decision to stand down was for family reasons.

“I have enjoyed my time as a councillor very much and would like to thank all the people who have supported me over the years,” said County Coun. Adam, who first joined the Labour Party in 1968 and apart from a short spell has been a member ever since.

Pendle Labour party president Azhar Ali said: “We would like to thank George for his long public service to the people of Pendle and Nelson in particular.

“He has always worked hard and stood up for what he felt was right, never making promises but always trying hard to deliver.”
