Noisy neighbours who made residents’ lives a misery are fined

Two noisy Pendle residents have been taken to court for continuing to cause a noise nuisance despite being told to stop.

Joanne Hanson (24), of Carleton Street, Nelson, appeared before Reedley magistrates charged with two breaches of a Noise Abatement Notice, served to her in October.

The notice required her to stop playing loud music late at night, which she failed to do.

She was fined £200 and ordered to pay £70 in prosecution costs and a £20 victim surcharge.

Five other breaches of the notice were also kept on record.

The court appearance comes after a television and multimedia player was seized by Pendle Council from her home in December as a result of months of loud music and rowdiness.

Meanwhile, Amanda Nolan (20), of Commercial Street, Brierfield, failed to appear at the court on the same date for three breaches of a Noise Abatement Notice served to her in December.

In her absence, she was fined £600 and ordered to pay £70 in prosecution costs and a £60 victim surcharge.

Pendle Council removed a television from her home in January after she breached her notice.

It follows a catalogue of complaints from neighbours of loud music, screaming, shouting and general rowdy behaviour late at night into the early morning, dating back to July, 2012.

Coun. John David, who looks after Environmental Health in Pendle, said: “These two residents have made their neighbours’ lives an absolute misery.

“Nobody should have to put up with such anti social behaviour.

“Let this be a warning to others that we will not tolerate noise nuisance in Pendle.”

John Heys, Pendle Council’s Domestic Noise Officer, added: “We are getting tough with people who make their neighbours’ lives a misery by being persistently noisy.

“It’s simple – people who don’t comply with Noise Abatement Notices are in danger of losing their noise making equipment and being taken to court and fined.”
