CHURCH: Stained glass window restored at St Mary’s

A CONGREGATION in West Craven is rejoicing once again after the restoration of a stained glass window.
Churchgoers at St Mary’s, Thornton-in-Craven, have expressed delight at the colourful window which was installed ahead of Sunday’s weekly morning service.
Clitheroe company Lightworks Stained Glass has completed just under three months arduous restoration work on the window at a cost of £7,000. The window was smashed last April by a burglar.
The window, depicting the Holy Family, was originally put in place in the middle of the 20th Century and was paid for by the Birley family.
Congregation member and former Thornton church warden of 18 years, Robert Hall, has praised the craftsmanship in producing a stunning result.
He said: “We are absolutely thrilled with it. It’s an amazing job they have done. The window was broken into literally hundreds of pieces.
“It’s such a very, very skilled bit of work replacing an ugly piece of wood that was there.”
Mr Hall says as pleased as the church is with the result, expensive protection has now been added to the replaced window in case of a repeat offence with the money coming from dwindling church funds.
He added: “It’s a sad situation, really. We’ve had this unbreakable polycarbonate sheeting put on to protect it. You can see it from the outside but fortunately it has no effect on the window itself. The big problem is what if it happens again?”
Daniel Burke and his sister Deborah, who run the family Lightworks business, are equally happy with the finished article.
Daniel said: “We’ve had the window since September and I’d say there’s certainly two-and-a-half months solid work gone into it.
“About 50% was salvageable which has obviously gone back into the panel. In terms of a restoration project, it was right up there in difficulty.
“It was a bit of a challenge but we are very pleased with it.”
