A HIGHLY respected Colne chemists is celebrating its birthday.

Leedams’ Pharmacy is marking its 90th year in business with a series of special events starting with an Open Day on Monday.

The pharmacy, in Keighley Road, Colne, will be offering free health checks and blood pressure testing to customers throughout the day. No appointment is required.

“This is just the start,” says owner Matthew Leedam, third generation of Leedam pharmacists. “We have a number of events planned throughout the year to celebrate such an important anniversary. We’re kicking off on Monday as that was my father’s birthday.”

The family business was originally called C. H. Leedam - Chemist and was established in 1922 by Cyril Horsfall Leedam in Nelson. The pharmacy in Colne was set up 30 years later by Cyril’s son – and Matthew’s father - Mr Alan Stansfield Leedam.

Several other family members work in the business, including Matthew’s mother Olga, sister Jackie, wife Justine and daughter Emily. Working in the community for so many years has meant that the Leedam’s have been familiar faces in the pharmacy for generations of local people.

Matthew, who is a skilled musician and musical director, added: “When this business started there was no NHS and my grandfather made up most medicines himself. Today, we are involved in providing services such as Smoking Cessation and Emergency Contraception and we are no longer restrained by geographical boundaries because we sell online, too.

“But although the environment may look different to my grandfather if he saw it today, I know that he would recognise our commitment to our customers because that is what has stood us in good stead all these years. I think some of our customers would be familiar to him, too – as we serve the descendents of the families he served.”
