Businessman back on TV with “Bank of Dave”
BURNLEY’S banking revolutionary David Fishwick is back on TV in his battle against Britain’s financial fat cats.
The self-made millionaire behind the “Bank of Dave” phenomenon will hit screens again tomorrow night with a brand new show.
The Channel 4 programme “Bank of Dave: Fighting the Fat Cats” will see the next chapter of Mr Fishwick’s crusade to change banking in Britain forever.
The Sabden-based entrepreneur, who runs David Fishwick Minibus Sales in Colne, originally set up Burnley Savings and Loans to help lend money to fledgling Burnley businesses cut off by the high street banks.
His simple not-for-profit community banking idea struck a chord with the national and gained support from high-profile figures including Business Secretary Vince Cable and former Labour spin doctor Alastair Campbell.
He opened a “tiny bank” in Keirby Walk which now has a two year waiting list to deposit and takes in and loans out £25,000 a week with all profits donated to charity.
The next instalment of the hit programme, which airs tomorrow night on Channel 4, shows how the “Bank of Dave” went global.
The world’s media from America to Russia turn up in Burnley and floods of people want to deposit money in his Burnley “bank” after the success of the last series.
The man dubbed the “People’s Banker” takes his battle for better banking all the way to Parliament and the top politicians in the land.
He faces a tough task trying to convince bosses at the Financial Services Authority about the community banking model he pioneered in Burnley.
Speaking ahead of the show, Mr Fishwick said: “It is very exciting. It was a real David versus Goliath struggle.
“What we have done has really rocked the world of banking by making a very simple model.
“What we really want to achieve is a community bank in every town and city in the country. The idea is generating its own momentum.
“If you could set up a ‘Bank of Dave’ run by decent, honest and ethical people run for the community and if you have 1,000 towns and start lending out to 1,000 businesses in each one suddenly you have rescued a million businesses.”
The show will air tomorrow night at 10pm on Channel 4 and then again on Channel 4 Seven.
