A PLAQUE has officially been unveiled to mark the 25th birthday of a thriving Colne community centre.
Housing Pendle’s North Valley Community Centre, was built back in 1988, after Pendle Council decided to provide funds from the budget surplus.
It has since gone from strength to strength, and celebrations were held at the Birtwistle Avenue site over the weekend to mark its silver anniversary.
Officially opened by Mr David Clamp, who was Pendle Council’s chairman of housing at the time the centre was built, the event saw entertainment provided by Phoenix Mixed Martial Arts Academy and Pendle Youth and Children’s Choirs.
During his opening speech, Mr Clamp praised the work of the original North Valley Residents’ Association led by chairman, Jim Hartley, in converting the new building into a community centre with a youth club, luncheon club, nursery an area for dances, entertainment and parties.
He was also pleased to present the centre’s secretary Mrs Agnes “Nan” Moulding with a plaque for 25 years service.
Other original members of the committee including Mrs Pat Clamp, Mrs Susan Tansey, Mrs Marjorie Northedge, Mr Walter Thompson, former Pendle Council housing manager Mr John Kirk, Mrs Glennda Clegg and Coun. David Clegg, were also in attendance.
Current chairman Mr Jim Smart thanked Mr Clamp for opening the proceedings, everyone who turned up to help celebrate the event, committee members and volunteers for the buffet. A special thank you was also given to Housing Pendle for running a children’s competition.
Ian Clark, Together Housing Group’s managing director for the region, said: “The North Valley Community Centre is a shining example of what can be achieved when the community pulls together for the good of the people who live there.
“The centre is well-run, well-led and a real hub for the community.’’
