A COLNE singer is playing his first ever home town gig in February after touring Europe and the UK for over 10 years.
Russell Shaun will be performing a host of Big Band classics when he takes to the stage at Colne Muni on Friday, February 17th, and is raring to go with the gig just over a month off.
Mr Shaun moved abroad to Spain about 12 years ago and began singing on cruise ships as he was keen to follow in the footsteps of his father Mike, himself a Big Band recording artist for the BBC.
A film crew will also be there on the night to record the concert which has been organised by Mr Shaun in an effort to try and promote himself and get his name out to a wider audience.
He said: “When I began singing professionally, this genre of music wasn’t popular so I moved to Spain and went on cruise ships to follow in my father’s footsteps if you like.
“I must’ve heard the music around the house as a child and liked it. I remember going to Australia in 1988 and seeing Frank Sinatra live and thinking ‘this guy is unbelievable’.
“I could’ve been singing music like Take That or Robbie Williams but if your heart isn’t in it there’s no point. I’ve played gigs in pubs with Match of the Day on the TV above me and people playing pool around me thinking ‘I just have to get through this’.
“This gig is an investment in my career. It’s great, I’ve heard from old school friends I’ve not spoken to for 30-odd years. One guy has bought five tickets and is coming up from Hertfordshire to see it.”
Mr Shaun has assembled a 14-piece swing band for this one special night which will feature unforgettable hits from legends such as Frank Sinatra, Bobby Darin, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jnr, Tony Bennett and Michael Bublé.
There’s already a strong local following that has snapped up almost 200 tickets and this is certain to bring an added buzz to the event.
Whether you are an existing fan or just a lover of Big Band and Swing, this promises to be one night definitely not to be missed so get the date in your diary.
Tickets are priced at £10 in advance and £12 on the door. Doors open at 7-30 p.m. for an 8-30 p.m. start. Contact the Muni Box Office on 661234.
