Pendle Hill 1612 huge artwork plan is scrapped

THE controversial proposal to paint the numerals 1612 on the side of Pendle Hill to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the Pendle Witches Trails has been scrapped.

Pendle Council’s Barrowford and Western Parishes Committee last night unanimously agreed the idea should not be proceeded with.

Coun. John David described the artwork as “environmental vandalism” and “absolutely outrageous.”

“The people of Pendle would think we had gone mad if this went ahead. It would have been a sheer waste of public money and of no benefit to anyone,” he said.

Had the plan gone ahead, it would have seen the date painted in 500ft by 1,400 ft numerals in a dye that would have lasted for a maximum of three months.
