WHEN Muslim members of Nelson Town Council requested the postponement of a meeting because of a religious event, BNP councillor Brian Parker opposed the idea.

Members were told the next meeting was due to be held at the end of September but some councillors pointed out that was in the period of Ramadan and suggested putting it off until early October.

But Coun. Parker said: "I am secular. I don't think religion should have a bearing on when council meetings are held. I just feel Islam is being imposed on us. I don't think we should accept that."

Some members felt the later date had been agreed at the previous meeting, but there was no inclusion of it in the minutes. Coun. Parker's motion of a meeting on September 24th got only two votes, and the October 8th date was agreed.

Coun. Gary Bird said the council needed to look at agreeing a set date – like the third Wednesday of each month and Mr Mousdale suggested new Town Clerk Mr Martin Harrison should formulate a list of future meeting dates.
