SHAMANIA - billed as "the only UK festival with a continuous music licence over four days" - lifts off a week today.
It is being held from August 1st-4th in a field off Gisburn Old Road, Blacko. Pendle Council and the police have promised to help anyone affected by the sound of round-the-clock "Psy-Trance" music. There is a 24-hour helpline and council staff will monitor noise levels throughout.

Coun. Linda Crossley, of the Licensing Committee, said: "Last year, we received 12 complaints about noise from the Shamania festival. The organisers complied with requests to turn down the noise. This year, we have put conditions on the event licence to keep noise down to a certain level, in line with national guidance for outdoor events.

"We want to make sure the event goes ahead without any noise nuisance, with respect for people living nearby. If people living near to the festival think the noise is too loud, they can call the council on the 24-hour emergency number: 661999.

"The console operators who will answer the call have a list of staff on duty at the site over the weekend, and will contact them immediately. These environmental health staff will go out to the home of the person complaining to measure the noise levels there. If the noise is louder than allowed, our environmental health staff can ask the organisers to turn down the sound. If they don't comply, we can take enforcement action."

Coun. Crossley added: "We really do want to reassure local people we are doing everything we can to make sure they are not disturbed by the festival. In addition, two of our licensing enforcement officers will be at the event to make sure the organisers comply with all the licensing conditions. They will make sure all security people at the event are properly registered, and people do not smoke in the tents - under the smoke free legislation this is against the law."

Police will also visit the festival throughout the weekend.
