AN elderly woman brought fear to dozens of motorists as she drove from Darwen to Nelson in the fast lane on the wrong side of the M65.
Motorway police received numerous reports about a car travelling eastbound to Colne on the west bound carriageway shortly after 10 p.m. yesterday.

Several vehicles swerved to avoid the Suzuki car in the incident which led to a Ford Fiesta crashing.

Four people had been travelling in the Fiesta and the driver had to be cut out by Lancashire Fire and Service, although police said afterwards that luckily all four had escaped serious injuries.

The woman had got onto the motorway at the Darwen end (Junction 4) and had travelled all the way to Nelson (Junction 13) before she was finally escorted off by the police who said inquiries into the incident are continuing.

A stretch of the M65 was closed for three hours because of the damage caused in the collision.
