Former Groves Hotel mosque plan go-ahead
A PROPOSAL for an improvement scheme at a major eyesore at a "gateway" into Nelson town centre has got the go-ahead from councillors.
Members of Pendle Council's Nelson Committee agreed on Wednesday to the conversion of the derelict Groves Hotel - the old Spring Bank – into a community centre and to the erection of a mosque in its grounds.
Outbuildings on the site will be converted to business starter units and the lodge will be restored and used as a house for the mosque imam or caretaker.
Coun. Mohammed Iqbal said the hotel building was being brought back into use for the whole community, which was to be welcomed.
And Coun. Nadeem Ahmed said the hotel had lain in a derelict state for many years and he was very pleased with the plans.
