FIREFIGHTERS have rescued a man from a fire that ripped through a Nelson house last night.
They were called to the dramatic incident in Smith Street at 10-24 p.m. and said they found the bedroom and downstairs of the terraced property well alight.

Two fire engines dashed to the scene and firefighters wearing breathing appartus rescued a man from inside. He was taken to hospital by ambulance.

In an earlier incident, just after 10 p.m., firefighters were called to a house in Bradshaw Street, Nelson, after reports of smoke billowing from the property.

They said they found the ground floor of the property well alight and reported that the kitchen was gutted by flames, while there was smoke damage to the rest of the property.
