WHEN Alex Hendry steps across the finishing line of the London Marathon next month, she will have some very personal reasons to celebrate.
Not only will she have proved to herself that, even at 50, she can rise to a challenge, she will also have raised money for a charity that holds a special place in her heart.
Alex, of Ringstone Crescent, Nelson, is aiming to raise £1,000 for the Children with Leukaemia charity in memory of her little boy, Paul, who died of the disease when he was just seven.
She said: "My son was just two and a half when he developed leukaemia. When he died in 1982, there were the same treatments available as there are now. I remember him as such a happy little soul who was more concerned about other children around him in hospital than he was about himself.
"Leukaemia is such a horrible disease. You really wouldn't want to watch someone die with it – especially not a child."
Alex has been training for the run, which takes place on April 13th, since last October.
An administrator with Gold Medal Travel on the Docklands in Preston, she was given a boost to her fund-raising by her boss, managing director Terry Fisher. He has donated £250 to the fund.
