STUDENTS and visitors at Nelson and Colne College rubbed shoulders with local sporting heroes at the opening of a new fitness centre at the Reedyford site.
Special guests were current student and successful triathlete Charlotte Edwards, Commonwealth gymnastics gold medallist Craig Heap and former student and Olympic bronze medallist Steven Burke, after whom the centre was named.

As part of a multi-million pound new build and refurbishment programme at the college, the sports facilities have been overhauled with a new six-court sports hall and state-of-the-art fitness centre.

The event was attended by college students and staff and pupils from local schools. Guests at the unveiling of the new fitness centre were entertained with an inspirational presentation by Craig Heap. School pupils and college students were then able to take part in sports activities and seek advice from the sports stars.

Craig, having enjoyed success in the world of gymnastics, is now passing on his knowledge to young people, inspiring them to fulfil their true potential.

Other college students are already enjoying success this year, with Jessica Duffy, Katie Pollard and Sammy Horsfield selected to play football for the North West in British College Sport events.

In addition, Katie was successful again with her table tennis partner Emily Stanworth when they won the BCS regional competition. The college will therefore be representing the North West in the National Finals in Loughborough at Easter.
