A MAN was taken to hospital for treatment to flash burns sustained in an explosion in an electricity cable this morning.
The explosion occurred in Charles Street, Nelson, around 1-30 a.m. and disrupted power supplies over a large area for four hours.

Fire and emergency crews cordoned the area off while United Utilities carried out repairs and the casualty was treated at the scene before being taken to the Royal Blackburn Hospital.

A police spokesman said they received reports from a member of the public of an explosion and flames coming out of the ground outside a house in the street. She said power was restored to most affected properties by 5-30 a.m.

A spokesman for the fire and rescue service advised people not to go near the scene of such incidents until they had been dealt with as there was a risk of further explosions.
