Nelson riverside wall collapse - £320,000 repairs completed
Published Date:

WORK on a collapsing riverside retaining wall in Goitside, Nelson, has been completed after months of construction.
The road, which provides access to Goitside car park and Tesco, has reopened after being resurfaced. It was closed to traffic in February but is back in action on schedule.
The high wall alongside the river had been propped up by "temporary" buttresses for 50 years. The £320,000 scheme – which included driving steel and concrete piles along the full length to make it safe – was carried out by specialists on behalf of Lancashire County Council.
The original stone has been reused in the reconstruction, and at the top is a green safety fence. At this stage, no road markings or parking restrictions have been laid on the road surface.
