THE winners of the first Pendle Community Volunteer Awards were honoured during a special ceremony at Nelson Town Hall yesterday.
More than 30 individuals and groups were recognised for their contribution to the community.

Mayor of Pendle Coun. Allan Buck came up with the idea of the awards, centred around the legions of local volunteers who work hard to make a difference to people's lives in Pendle.

"This was our opportunity to recognise and appreciate the many groups and individuals who have excelled in their areas to improve our community," said Coun. Buck.

The categories covered everything from volunteer work to environmental projects and ranged from young people to lifetime achievers.

There were 10 categories:
Young achiever of the year
Leader of the year
Volunteer of the year
Young volunteer of the year
Community organisation of the year
Environment project of the year
Play setting of the year
Community building of the year
Volunteer children's worker of the year
Lifetime achievement

Don't miss tomorrow Nelson Leader for a full list of the winners.

Over 30 local people were nominated for the awards, organised in conjunction with Pendle Community Network. The winners received a trophy and framed certificate from the Mayor in the council chamber.
This was followed by a civic reception.
