DON'T drink and drive this Christmas, say police in Pendle.

The festive crackdown has begun and high-profile enforcement activity will be taking place across the county throughout December.

The Pennine Division road policing team launched its campaign outside the Oaks Hotel, Reedley, this week.

Chief Insp. Jon Donnelly said: "We have found there is a direct link between the number of breath tests carried out and the number of deaths on the road attributable to drink-driving. Officers will use their powers to both catch offenders and to send out a clear message that drink-driving will not be tolerated."

He added: "One of the key messages we want to get across during this campaign is the fact you could easily be over the limit the morning after a night out. Drivers should ask themselves when their last drink was and make sure there is a considerable gap between their last drink and getting behind the wheel.

"For me the message to motorists remains simple - do not drink and drive or you will be caught. Lancashire Constabulary will continue to take a firm approach on this issue and I'm sure the public of Lancashire would agree with me that every death on Lancashire's roads is one too many."
