more than 500 people have signed a petition calling on Royal Mail to place a post box outside the post office on the Place de Creil in Nelson.
The signatures, collected in just two weeks, were gathered by postmaster Inayat Vali and the petition was presented to Pendle MP Andrew Stephenson, who is to take the matter up with Royal Mail and Postal Services Minister Ed Davey.
Mr Vali said many of his customers were unaware of the difference between the Post Office and Royal Mail.
“Royal Mail has all the power while the Post Office is toothless,” he said.
“What we are asking for is a letter box outside the post office so people can post their letters here rather than walk a quarter of a mile to the nearest one. We have spent money providing postal services in the town centre and would like a post box for our customers.
“People do not always want to leave their mail with us, preferring their independence and using the letter box instead.”
Mr Stephenson said he had raised the matter with Royal Mail before without success but would present the petition in a bid to get a change of heart.
“I will also hand it to the Minister and may even raise the matter in Parliament.
“Royal Mail is saying there is a box round the corner but it is actually some distance away.
“I cannot think of another post office which does not have a mail box outside its doors.
