Annual awards evening cancelled

In accordance with their usual practice, Nelson Town Council invited nominations from the public for their annual Pride of Nelson Awards in November and December last year.

But the council only received five valid nominations and, in view of this, a decision was made not to hold the annual awards evening this month as planned.

The Town Council took the view that to hold an awards evening for just five nominations in four award categories was neither economical nor a justifiable use of Council Tax payers’ money.

In view of this, the Town Council has sent a Pride of Nelson Certificate to each of the nominated people who are:

l Abdul Hafiz Malik - Adult Volunteer – 30 years voluntary work for Ithaad Community Trust and long standing secretary of the Trust

l Helen and Sheila Spencer – Adult Volunteer – 40 years as hard working leaders for brownies and guides.

l Molly Wareing – Young Volunteer – undertaking voluntary work at Age UK, Walton Lane every Saturday in 2014.

l Age UK, Walton Lane – Helping and Caring for Others.

l Nelson Football Club – Sporting Heroes Bringing pride to the town, providing facilities for the young and the old, starting walking football for the elderly and raising funds for a new stand.
