COUNCILLORS have welcomed the start of repair works at an important landmark building on the approach to Nelson from the west.
Scaffolding went up around the former Groves (Spring Bank) Hotel in Manchester Road at the weekend, hours before the future of the building was to be discussed by Pendle Council’s Nelson Committee.
Members were to be asked to refer the matter to the Executive with a recommendation that officers be given the authority to commence works immediately, but Executive Director (Regeneration) Brian Cookson told them that work had already started and they simply agreed to note a report presented to them.
“All the roof timbers have been removed to reduce the pressure on the walls, and the slates and timber are being stored for reuse. The building is being allowed to dry out. Asbestos has been found on the site and the Health and Safety Executive has been informed,” said Mr Cookson.
