A SPECIAL card from the Queen took pride of place at Elsie Wright’s 100th birthday celebrations at the Tempest Arms in Elslack.
Close friends and family gathered to celebrate Elsie’s centenary year and look back on her life in Barnoldswick.
She grew up in York Street as the eldest of three sisters and was a pupil at Church School. Her favourite hobby was dancing and she performed in local shows. After leaving school, Elsie went to work at Moss Shed, the weaving mill. She met and married electrician Roger and the couple moved to Cheltenham.
They had one son, also called Roger, and then returned to Barnoldswick in 1948. Elsie worked part-time in the Ouzledale Foundry canteen until retirement. Roger Snr. sadly died in 1983 and Elsie has lived alone in Clayton Street since then. Although she has visiting carers, Roger says Elsie is in great health and gets out every week to a day centre.
