The globe’s eyes will be on Barnoldswick tomorrow when the town hosts the inaugural World Meat Pie Championship.

Valentine’s Day will be a celebration of all things culinary in Barlick and includes hosting the first World Meat Pie Championship, open to amateur home bakers and pie makers, with a separate sections for pie enthusiast professionals.

Held inside a marquee in Barnoldswick Town Square, the competition is part of the town’s “February Feast: Love food, Love Barnoldswick” event, organised by the Town Centre Action Group together with Barnoldswick Town Council.

As well as judging on pies of prodigious quality, there will be cookery demonstrations throughout the day to showcase Barnoldswick’s restaurants and food outlets.

Also inside the marquee will be a super selection of food stalls from the usual Saturday market, the Barnoldswick in Bloom group will have a polytunnel set up for planting seeds and a “vegetable orchestra” activity will be running for children to create musical instruments out of vegetables.

Co-chairman of the Town Centre Action Group, Richard Milner said: “The idea was to kick away those winter blues.

“All these events are always well supported so we thought we’d try and lift the town earlier in the year with an event before April’s St George’s Day celebration.

“It’s off the back of Barnoldswick’s Great British High Street Award and we want to showcase what the town has to offer.”

Experienced pie judge James Wilson is expecting 50 sumptuously filled home-baked pastry creations to be submitted to the tasting table.

James said: “We Googled World Meat Pie Championship to make sure it had not been done before, so we claimed it.

“The name is purely and simply a hook, it can have any filling. Somebody has contacted me with the suggestion of doing an all day breakfast which looks like they are going to be quite clever with how they do it.

“I’ve also had somebody ask about a fruit pie. The great thing about a pie as it can be a casing for anything. It can be a whole meal or a snack.”

There is still time to enter a pie and for all details on the World Meat Pie Championship, go to www.piechamps.com

Following the February Feast, the marquee will then be used for a variety of activities during half term week. Visit www.lovebarnoldswick.com/ for more information.
