A fire chief has hit out at vandals who set a series of rubbish fires on Bonfire Night.

Crews from Nelson were called out several times between 6pm and 11pm to a series of blazes at locations across the town.

Crew manager Gary Thorpe said: "Some people appear to use Bonfire Night as an excuse to set fire to anything.

"We weren't called to any bonfires but we did attend several rubbish blazes.

"Whoever is responsible should realise they may be taking a crew away from a major incident."

Crews were also called to a car blaze at 3-30am in Fleet Street, Nelson, which is believed to be deliberate. Firefighters used a hosereel jet to tackle the flames and the cause is now being investigated by police and the fire service.
