Former London Mayor Boris Johnson dropped by in Nelson as the “Brexit” battle bus called in to town.

The leading figure in the campaign to leave the EU was accompanied by Justice Secretary Michael Gove and Employment Minister Priti Patel as the trio visited Farmhouse Biscuits.

The prominent vote leave campaigners were given a tour of the factory where they chatted to owner Philip McIvor and other staff before sampling some of the company’s famous biscuits.

Speaking to the Nelson Leader on board the bus Mr Johnson said he had enjoyed his visit to Lancashire, which he described as “beautiful”, and received encouragement for the leave campaign.

He said: “Farmhouse Biscuits is a company that literally controls its own dough, unlike the UK which is sending £50m. a day of uncontrolled contributions to Brussels, some of which we get back to be spent by EU bureaucrats in this country, and a lot that we never see again.

“I think people here are pro-European in a general sense but can see the problem in that the EU is going in a different direction.”
