Nelson lorry park gets green light
PENDLE firm Matthew Kibble Transport has been given the go-ahead to create a lorry park off Leeds Road, Nelson.
But members of Pendle Council’s Nelson Committee also decided to restrict lorries on Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays so residents can have some peace.
The site at the top of Junction Street, next to Gertrude Street, is divided by a river - Swinden Clough - and the plan is to culvert it to make it a complete area with 24 lorry spaces.
Concerns about wildlife were expressed by the public at the meeting. It was pointed out, however, that bats could live in the culvert.
Concerns have also been revealed about the possibility of traffic noise and fumes.
It was suggested times should be limited at weekends and Bank Holidays. Initially there was talk of 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The firm does need the chance to return vehicles there at weekends, of course.
But Mr Kibble told the meeting: “I’m happy to go for 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sundays.” He added it would be rarely used that day.
Labour Group leader Coun. Mohammed Iqbal proposed limits but said: “There’s nothing to stop heavy duty lorries going past at 2 a.m. on Leeds Road.”
And committee chairman Coun. Nadeem Younis said: “I think the 10 a.m. suggestion is a reasonable compromise.”
However, Coun. Eileen Ansar commented: “I don’t think they should be trading on Sunday.” And Coun. Kathleen Shore added: “People like a lie-in on Sunday.”
In the end, the committee agreed a go-ahead but limited times to 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday and Bank Holidays.
