Nelson road bridge work delayed

The re-opening of a busy road bridge in Nelson has been put back several weeks.

Walton Lane had been due to re-open last week, following reconstruction of the bridge over the railway, but delays in the work mean it will remain closed until early March.

A Network Rail spokesman said: “We had intended excavating the various services (gas, water, electricity) that run through the bridge and diverting them on to a temporary bridge (the same one pedestrians use during the road closure).

“The railway closures were brought forward to November last year, and this did not give us sufficient time to complete the negotiations with all the utility providers.

“That left us with the situation in which all the utilities, except Virgin Media, were diverted on to the temporary bridge.

“The Virgin cable is suspended separately over the railway for 42m, and this has hampered our earthwork.

“A second cable belongs to BT, and there have been issues with its position on the approaches to the bridge, which has meant the approach barriers (the crash barriers at the side of the road where it goes up over the railway) have had to be redesigned.

“The redesign has added to the timescale for the work.”

The spokesman assured pedestrians who are using the temporary footbridge it will remain in place until the road reopens, and the bridge would be gritted during cold weather.
