Shadow Secretary of State for Local Government - Hilary Benn – was in Pendle last week.
He joined Pendle’s Labour Parliamentary candidate Azhar Ali to visit a number of controversial greenfield sites which are being considered for housing developments.
Azhar Ali said: “I had a very useful discussion with Hilary about the state of planning in Pendle. I pointed out that with the relaxation of planning laws under the Tories, a free-for-all has been created that is now putting our beautiful countryside at risk from big developments of unaffordable housing around Barrowford, Nelson and Colne.”
Mr Benn said: “Labour have committed to protecting our greenfield sites with a ‘Brownfield First’ policy. It just doesn’t make sense to destroy our green fields when there are acres of brownfield sites available that could be built on instead. That’s why we want to help councils unlock brownfield sites. Azhar has always been a great champion for Pendle and I wanted to make sure I had the chance to see the problems.”
And Azhar added: “We have over 1,000 empty homes in Pendle and it’s crazy that Conservative planning laws are putting our countryside at risk.”
